This iconic tree signifies water in the desert. Fremont Cottonwood, or Populus fremontii, is a decisduous tree that grows along riparian waterways below 6,500 ft elevation throughout the southwest. It has triangular/heart-shaped leaves that flutter in the wind and turn yellow in autumn before falling in the winter. It has an open crown and whitish bark that is deeply furrowed when mature. This majestic tree grows up to 90 ft tall and flowers March-June. Plant in very sandy, well-draining soils, in full sun with plenty of water.
