Opuntia engelmannii, or Englemann’s Prickly Pear, is a drought tolerant cactus species found in sandy and rocky soils from 1000-9000 ft. Found in desert scrub, semi-desert grasslands, and oak woodlands, this plant is quite versatile in where it can thrive. It grows to 3 ft tall and 4 ft wide and flowers April-July with large, yellow to pinkish-orange blooms that attract native bees. The bright red fruits, or “tunas,” feed birds and other wildlife, as well as people! Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-draining soils.
