Ferocactus wislizeni, or Candy Barrel Cactus, is a classic cactus species of the Sonoran Desert that is just slightly taller than it is wide and has large fish-hook spines and about 20-28 ribs. This cactus grows in sandy, gravelly, or alluvial soils in desert scrub to the lower reaches of grassland and oak woodland habitats, at 1,000-4,500 ft in elevation. The large flowers range from orange and red to yellow and bloom July-September, followed by yellow fruits that feed wildlife and can be made into candy!
